Surgical times can take anywhere from two to five hours. The surgeon begins by making an incision from hipbone to hipbone, along with another incision which frees the bellybutton from the tissue adjacent to it. The abdominal muscles are revealed by separating and lifting the skin. The surgeon will then tighten these muscles. The skin flap is then pulled back and the excess skin cut away. The bellybutton has a new hole cut for it and is stitched into place. The incisions are then stitched closed.
After the procedure, most patients are able to return to work within two to four weeks, though more strenuous activities may need to be put off for four to six weeks. Complications which can occur with tummy tuck surgery may include the following: bleeding under the skin flap, blood clots, conspicuous scarring, infection, poor healing, skin loss, and the need for additional surgery.
