A tummy tuck, also referred to as tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure providing a flatter, more pleasing abdomen. To achieve this, the muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened and excess fat and skin of the middle and lower abdomen are removed. This procedure may occur in a surgical center, office or hospital, and typically involves the use of either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation. The procedure is usually completed within two to five hours.

In order to reveal, and thus tighten, the abdominal muscles, the skin is separated and lifted. The skin flap is then pulled back down and the excess skin cut away. The bellybutton is stitched into place after having a new hole cut for it, then the incisions are closed.
After the procedure, most patients go back to work within two to four weeks, though more strenuous activities may need to be postponed for four to six weeks. Complications which can occur with tummy tuck surgery may include the following: bleeding under the skin flap, blood clots, conspicuous scarring, infection, poor healing, skin loss, and the need for additional surgery.
