Tummy Tuck

The abdomen—better known as the “tummy”—comes in many shapes and sizes, some more pleasing than others. Time, gravity, and pregnancies all leave their marks on our abdominal region, sometimes to the point that this region bulges out and becomes a source of unhappiness, even of shame.

Fortunately, a procedure exists that can sculpt your tummy into a more aesthetically desirable form. Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a "tummy tuck," is a major surgical procedure that dramatically improves the look of the tummy by:

  • removing excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen
  • tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall

The procedure can drastically reduce a bulging belly, loose skin and excess tissue.

Why have a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is basically a process in which a surgeon sculpts the abdomen to a more attractive, desirable look and shape. Thus, there are numerous aesthetically unpleasing conditions that can be remedied by a tummy tuck. These conditions include:

  • Excess fatty tissue in abdominal region
  • Excess or sagging skin in abdominal region
  • Protruding abdomen, disproportionate to the rest of your body
  • Loose abdominal skin after weight loss
  • Loose abdominal skin after gastric bypass
  • Caeserian section scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Off-centre belly button
  • Weakened or separated abdominal muscles

How does a tummy tuck differ from liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which the abdomen is incised with a stainless steel hollow tube, called a cannula, and fat cells are sucked out using a powerful vacuum. Thus, liposuction deals only with the removal of localized fat cells. A tummy tuck, however, addresses several more issues. A tummy tuck involves the removal not only of fat cells, but of excess tissue. A tummy tuck also involves the tightening of the abdominal wall.

Who are the best candidates for a tummy tuck?

The best candidates for tummy tucks are men or women who are in relatively good shape and good health, but suffer from a large fat deposit in the abdominal region or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet and/or exercise. The surgery is particularly useful for women who, after multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to their original shape. A tummy tuck can also improve loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity.

Who should wait to have a tummy tuck?

Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight should postpone the tummy tuck surgery until after they have achieved their weight loss goals. As well, women who plan to become pregnant again should wait until they have had all the children they desire, as the vertical abdominal muscles tightened during a tummy tuck can separate again during pregnancy.

If you have scars leftover from previous abdominal surgery, your doctor may caution against a tummy tuck, or may warn you that scars could become abnormally prominent.

Will a tummy tuck give me a toned, flat stomach?

Maybe it will; maybe it won’t. It is important to note that a tummy tuck will not magically solve all your abdominal worries. Abdominal fat occurs in two different levels: superficial and deep. Superficial abdominal fat is located just below the skin and above the abdominal muscles. The deep abdominal fat is located inside the abdominal cavity on the intestines. This “apron” of fat around the intestines is one of the major storage areas of fat in the body. Removing superficial fat is perfectly safe; removing intestinal fat is dangerous, and not possible either by liposuction or tummy tuck. Fat on the intestines can only be diminished by weight loss through diet and exercise. Tummy tucks are for body sculpture, not weight loss. Weight loss is better achieved with a controlled diet and regular exercise. If you maintain a high calorie intake after your tummy tuck, you will regain your weight.
