The surgeon begins the procedure by making an incision from hipbone to hipbone, along with another incision which frees the bellybutton from its adjacent tissue. In order to reveal, and thus tighten, the abdominal muscles, the skin is separated and lifted. The skin flap is then pulled back down and the surplus skin excised. Once a new hole is cut for the bellybutton, it is then stitched into place, and the incisions are then closed.
