Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is the surgical procedure designed to modify the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. This can be achieved by reducing or increasing the size, narrowing the span of the nostrils, changing the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose, or changing the angle between the nose and upper lip.
Rhinoplasty usually requires between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may require more time. Typically performed with either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation, the procedure can take place in a surgical center, surgeon’s office, or hospital. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, along with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely confined to the inside of the nose. With the incisions made, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more desirable shape to can then be molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin will be pulled back and the incisions will then be closed with sutures. Patients usually find that they can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be held off for two to three weeks. Potential risks can include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
