Rhinoplasty, otherwise known as a nose job, is the surgical procedure designed to modify the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. There are several ways in which the nose can be modified, including the following: (1) reducing or increasing the overall size; (2) changing the angle between the nose and upper lip; (3) narrowing the span of the nostrils; and/or (4) changing the shape of the tip or the bridge of the nose.

Rhinoplasty most often requires between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may require more time. The procedure can be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital, and typically involves either a local anesthetic combined with sedation or general anesthesia.

Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, along with those made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely made on the inside of the nose. With the incisions made, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage the preferred shape to are then molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the surgeon is happy with the shape of the nose, he will pull back the skin and close the incisions.

Patients typically find that they can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks. There are possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty which can include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
