Rhinoplasty, known more commonly as a nose job, is the surgical procedure which can alter the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. This can be achieved by reducing or increasing the size, narrowing the span of the nostrils, changing the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose, or changing the angle between the nose and upper lip.

Rhinoplasty typically takes between one and two hours to complete, though more complicated procedures may require more time. Typically performed with either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation, the procedure can take place in a surgical center, surgeon’s office, or hospital.

Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, along with those made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely made on the inside of the nose. After the incisions are made, the skin of the nose is separated and lifted from its underlying cartilage and bone. The bone and cartilage the desired shape to are then sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. When the desired shape is achieved, the skin is then pulled back and the incisions are closed.

Patients usually can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks. The potential risks and complications occurring with rhinoplasty an include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
