Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, in combination with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely confined to the inside of the nose. The skin of the nose is lifted after the incisions are made to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The procedure an be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital.

Patients are typically able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be postponed for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
