Rhinoplasty generally takes between one and two hours to complete, longer for more extensive procedures. It can be performed in a surgeon’s office, a surgical center, or in a hospital with either local anesthesia combined with sedation or with general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, in combination with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely placed in the inside of the nose. The skin of the nose is lifted after the incisions are made to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more preferable shape to may then be molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the surgeon is happy with the shape of the nose, he will pull back the skin and close the incisions. Patients typically find that they can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks. There are possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty which can include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing. Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, is the surgical procedure designed to change the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. In order to achieve this, the size can reduced or increased, the span of the nostrils narrowed, the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose changed, or the angle between the nose and upper lip altered.
