Rhinoplasty, known more commonly as a nose job, is the surgical procedure designed to modify the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. In order to achieve this, the size can reduced or increased, the span of the nostrils narrowed, the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose changed, or the angle between the nose and upper lip altered.

Rhinoplasty generally requires between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may take longer. The type of anesthesia most commonly used is either a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic combined with sedation. The procedure an be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital.

Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, in combination with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely located in the inside of the nose. The underlying bone and cartilage are revealed by lifting the skin of the nose once the incisions are made. The bone and cartilage the desired shape to may then be sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin will be pulled back and the incisions will then be closed with sutures.

Patients typically can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be held off for two to three weeks. Potential risks can include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
