Rhinoplasty usually takes between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may require more time. The type of anesthesia most commonly used is either a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic combined with sedation. The procedure an be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, in combination with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are only placed in the inside of the nose. Once the incisions are made, the skin of the nose is then lifted to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage the desired shape to may then be sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. When the desired shape is achieved, the skin is then pulled back and the incisions are closed. Patients can normally return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be held off for two to three weeks. The possible risks associated with rhinoplasty may include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
