Rhinoplasty most often takes between one and two hours to complete, longer for more extensive procedures. It can be performed in a surgeon’s office, a surgical center, or in a hospital with either local anesthesia combined with sedation or with general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, along with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are only placed in the inside of the nose. Once the incisions are made, the skin of the nose is then lifted to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more preferable shape to are then sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. After achieving the desired shape, the surgeon will pull back the skin and close the incisions. Patients are generally able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be held off for two to three weeks. There are possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty which can include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
