Rhinoplasty typically requires between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may require more time. General anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation is typically used, and the procedure can take place in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, as well as those made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely placed in the inside of the nose. The skin of the nose is lifted after the incisions are made to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more appealing shape to can then be molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. After achieving the desired shape, the surgeon will pull back the skin and close the incisions. Patients can, on average, return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be put off for two to three weeks. The possible risks associated with rhinoplasty may include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
