Rhinoplasty generally requires between one and two hours to complete, though more complicated procedures may require more time. It can be performed in a surgeon’s office, a surgical center, or in a hospital with either local anesthesia combined with sedation or with general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, as well as those made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are only made on the inside of the nose. The skin of the nose is lifted after the incisions are made to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage the desired shape to may then be molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. When the desired shape is achieved, the skin is then pulled back and the incisions are closed. Patients typically find that they can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
