Rhinoplasty, known also as a nose job, is the surgical procedure designed to change the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. In order to achieve this, the size can reduced or increased, the span of the nostrils narrowed, the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose changed, or the angle between the nose and upper lip altered. Rhinoplasty most often requires between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may require more time. The procedure can be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital, and typically involves either a local anesthetic combined with sedation or general anesthesia. Patients are typically able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be held off for two to three weeks. The potential risks and complications occurring with rhinoplasty an include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, alongside any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are only placed in the inside of the nose. Once the incisions are made, the skin of the nose is then lifted to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more pleasing shape to may then be molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. When the desired shape is achieved, the skin is then pulled back and the incisions are closed.
