Rhinoplasty usually requires between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may require more time. The procedure can be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital, and typically involves either a local anesthetic combined with sedation or general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, along with those made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely made on the inside of the nose. The underlying bone and cartilage are revealed by lifting the skin of the nose once the incisions are made. The bone and cartilage the preferred shape to are then sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. When the desired shape is achieved, the skin is then pulled back and the incisions are closed. Patients are generally able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be postponed for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
