Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, along with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely made on the inside of the nose. With the incisions made, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying bone and cartilage. Rhinoplasty typically takes between one and two hours to complete, though more complicated procedures may take longer. The type of anesthesia most commonly used is either a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic combined with sedation. The procedure an be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital.

Patients typically can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be postponed for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
