Rhinoplasty, also referred to as a nose job, is the surgical procedure which can alter the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. There are several ways in which the nose can be modified, including the following: (1) reducing or increasing the overall size; (2) changing the angle between the nose and upper lip; (3) narrowing the span of the nostrils; and/or (4) changing the shape of the tip or the bridge of the nose.

Rhinoplasty generally takes between one and two hours to complete, though more complicated procedures may take longer. The type of anesthesia most commonly used is either a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic combined with sedation. The procedure an be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital.

Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, along with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely placed in the inside of the nose. With the incisions made, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage the desired shape to are then sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. After achieving the desired shape, the surgeon will pull back the skin and close the incisions.

Patients typically can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be postponed for two to three weeks. Potential risks can include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
