Rhinoplasty typically takes between one and two hours to complete, longer for more complicated procedures. General anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation is typically used, and the procedure can take place in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, in combination with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely confined to the inside of the nose. After the incisions are made, the skin of the nose is separated and lifted from its underlying cartilage and bone. The bone and cartilage the preferred shape to may then be molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the surgeon is happy with the shape of the nose, he will pull back the skin and close the incisions. Patients are generally able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be put off for two to three weeks. The possible risks associated with rhinoplasty may include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
