Rhinoplasty most often requires between one and two hours to complete, longer for more complicated procedures. Typically performed with either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation, the procedure can take place in a surgical center, surgeon’s office, or hospital. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, combine with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are only made on the inside of the nose. The underlying bone and cartilage are revealed by lifting the skin of the nose once the incisions are made. The bone and cartilage a more desirable shape to may then be molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin will be pulled back and the incisions will then be closed with sutures. Patients are typically able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be postponed for two to three weeks. There are possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty which can include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
