Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, is the surgical procedure intended to alter the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. There are several ways in which the nose can be modified, including the following: (1) reducing or increasing the overall size; (2) changing the angle between the nose and upper lip; (3) narrowing the span of the nostrils; and/or (4) changing the shape of the tip or the bridge of the nose.
Rhinoplasty generally takes between one and two hours to complete, though more complicated procedures may take longer. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin will be pulled back and the incisions will then be closed with sutures. Patients are usually able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be postponed for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
