Rhinoplasty, known more commonly as a nose job, is the surgical procedure designed to alter the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. This can be achieved in several ways. The overall size can be reduced or increased, the span of the nostrils narrowed, the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose changed, or the angle between the nose and upper lip altered. Rhinoplasty usually takes between one and two hours to complete, though more complicated procedures may require more time. The procedure can be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital, and typically involves either a local anesthetic combined with sedation or general anesthesia. Patients usually find that they can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be put off for two to three weeks. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, combine with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely confined to the inside of the nose. The underlying bone and cartilage are revealed by lifting the skin of the nose once the incisions are made. The bone and cartilage the desired shape to may then be sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. After achieving the desired shape, the surgeon will pull back the skin and close the incisions.
