Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, as well as those made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are only located in the inside of the nose. With the incisions made, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more preferable shape to may then be sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin will be pulled back and the incisions will then be closed with sutures.

Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, is the surgical procedure which can alter the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. This can be achieved in several ways. The overall size can be reduced or increased, the span of the nostrils narrowed, the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose changed, or the angle between the nose and upper lip altered.

Rhinoplasty generally requires between one and two hours to complete, longer for more extensive procedures. The procedure can be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital, and typically involves either a local anesthetic combined with sedation or general anesthesia.

Patients are typically able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks. The possible risks associated with rhinoplasty may include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
