Rhinoplasty, also referred to as a nose job, is the surgical procedure designed to alter the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. There are several ways in which the nose can be modified, including the following: (1) reducing or increasing the overall size; (2) changing the angle between the nose and upper lip; (3) narrowing the span of the nostrils; and/or (4) changing the shape of the tip or the bridge of the nose. Rhinoplasty typically requires between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may take longer. General anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation is typically used, and the procedure can take place in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, in combination with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are only made on the inside of the nose. With the incisions made, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more preferable shape to are then molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. When the desired shape is achieved, the skin is then pulled back and the incisions are closed. Patients usually can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be held off for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
