Rhinoplasty, known more commonly as a nose job, is the surgical procedure designed to modify the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. This can involve a reduction or increase in the size, a narrowing of the span of the nostrils, a change in the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose, or an alteration to the angle between the nose and upper lip.
Rhinoplasty generally takes between one and two hours to complete, longer for more extensive procedures. General anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation is typically used, and the procedure can take place in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, alongside any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely located in the inside of the nose. The skin of the nose is lifted after the incisions are made to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more pleasing shape to can then be sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. The skin will be pulled back and the incisions closed once the desired shape is achieved. Patients are usually able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity should be postponed for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
