Rhinoplasty generally requires between one and two hours to complete, though more complicated procedures may take longer. It can be performed in a surgeon’s office, a surgical center, or in a hospital with either local anesthesia combined with sedation or with general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, combine with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely made on the inside of the nose. With the incisions made, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage the desired shape to may then be molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the surgeon is happy with the shape of the nose, he will pull back the skin and close the incisions. Patients usually find that they can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be avoided for two to three weeks. The possible risks associated with rhinoplasty may include the following: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
