Rhinoplasty typically takes between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may take longer. Typically performed with either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation, the procedure can take place in a surgical center, surgeon’s office, or hospital. Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, along with any made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are only located in the inside of the nose. The skin of the nose is lifted after the incisions are made to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more appealing shape to may then be sculpted by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin will be pulled back and the incisions will then be closed with sutures. Patients are usually able to return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be postponed for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
