Rhinoplasty, known more commonly as a nose job, is the surgical procedure aimed at altering the look of the nose, though it may also be used to relieve breathing problems. This can involve a reduction or increase in the size, a narrowing of the span of the nostrils, a change in the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose, or an alteration to the angle between the nose and upper lip.

Rhinoplasty most often requires between one and two hours to complete, though more extensive procedures may take longer. The type of anesthesia most commonly used is either a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic combined with sedation. The procedure an be performed in a surgeon’s office, surgical center, or hospital.

Rhinoplasty can be either opened or closed: open rhinoplasty involving incisions which are made externally, or on the outside of the nose, as well as those made inside of the nose, closed rhinoplasty referring to incisions which are solely made on the inside of the nose. Once the incisions are made, the skin of the nose is then lifted to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage a more pleasing shape to are then molded by removing, adding to, or rearranging. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin will be pulled back and the incisions will then be closed with sutures.

Patients usually can return to work within one to two weeks, though more strenuous activity may need to be held off for two to three weeks. Possible risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty are as follows: infection, bursting of blood vessels, the need for additional surgeries, adverse anesthesia reactions, dissatisfaction with results, airway obstruction, bleeding, excessive scarring, and poor healing.
