Board of plastic surgery Plastic Surgery, which involves both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, is a branch of surgery involving the repair or replacement of malformed, injured or lost organs or tissues of the body. The two main differences between reconstructive and cosmetic surgery are as follows: (1) reconstructive surgery is generally performed to improve function while cosmetic surgery is generally performed to improve form or appearance; and (2) reconstructive surgery is generally covered by insurance while cosmetic surgery is not.
Reconstructive surgery is meant to correct abnormalities occurring from congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease. Reconstructive procedures may include flap surgery, hand surgery, laser surgery, microsurgery, skin grafts, and tissue expansion.

Cosmetic surgery has to do with the enhancement or beautification of specified parts of the body.
