General information on plastic surgery: Read on for statistics, resources, articles, facts about, and information of plastic and cosmetic surgery. We’ve compiled a list of terms and topics commonly referred to when discussing plastic surgery.

What is plastic surgery?

A branch of surgery which may also be referred to as aesthetic and facial (when just the facial area is being treated). Plastic surgery encompasses both reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. The two main differences between the two are as follows: (1) reconstructive procedures are mainly performed to improve functions, while cosmetic procedures are mainly performed to improve appearance; and (2) insurance will usually cover reconstructive procedures but not cosmetic procedures.

Benefits of plastic surgery: Aside from the physical benefits that can be achieved with certain plastic surgery procedures, there is also often a psychological benefit as well. Patients often feel an increased sense of self-confidence after their procedure. While there are advantages and disadvantages of each procedure, many find that the advantages outweigh the negatives against plastic surgery.

Procedures: There are many different types, and these can include the following:

Procedures for breasts: These can include breast enlargement, breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast lifts, along with reconstructive procedures following breast cancer.

Eyelid lift, blepharoplasty: Performed on the eyes to provide undereye relief for eye bags along with relief for drooping upper eyelids.

Rhinoplasty: Procedure to reshape the nose and sometimes relieve breathing problems. Because the nose is often related to ethnicity, African American patients, Asian patients, and patients of other ethnicities often want to change their nose but keep the same ethnic feel. Different methods need to be used for, say, the black nose than for a Caucasian nose. If this is a concern for you, be sure to discuss it with your surgeon and find out if he or she has any relevant experience.

Liposuction: Procedure to improve body shape which can involve the removal of fat and skin from hips, back, chin, cheeks, neck, upper arms, stomach, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves, ankles and other areas. Typically provides little relief for stretch marks.

Tummy Tuck: Procedure involving the removal of excess fat and the tightening of abdominal muscles in order to flatten the abdomen. Commonly performed after weight loss or after gastric bypass surgery.

Face lift: Procedure to improve sagging skin of the face, along with jowls and loose neck skin, through the removal of excess fat and the tightening of muscle.

Other procedures include chemical peels, collagen/fat injections, dermabrasion, ear surgery, facial plastic reconstructive surgery, facial implants, forehead lift, hair replacement, laser facial resurfacing, lip reduction, male breast reduction/gynecomastia, penis enlargement, and more.

For men: Procedures are becoming increasingly more popular with the male segment of our population. In fact, men are looking to become handsome with plastic surgery more than ever before. The three most popular procedures for men in the year 2003, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, included nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and liposuction.

Procedures for teenagers: While some procedures are becoming more popular with the teen population, there are pros and cons of teenage plastic surgery. With rhinoplasty, for instance, most surgeons prefer to wait until after a patient’s growth spurt, typically 16 for girls and 19 for boys. Breast augmentation and teenage girls is becoming more common, though many are concerned by this. The benefits of these procedures can be great, but younger patients simply may not be prepared for the psychological impact of surgery.

Cost of plastic surgery: will vary according to the particular procedure that you’re having done. For instance, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the following five procedures and their average surgeon fees for the year 2002 were as follows: rhinoplasty – $3,469; liposuction – $2,074; breast augmentation – $3,436; eyelid surgery – $2,455; and facelift – $5,352. Financing for your procedure may be available through your insurance company if it is considered a reconstructive procedure. If it is solely considered a cosmetic procedure, however, insurance will most likely not cover the cost. Plastic Surgery Associations, Boards and Societies: A surgeon can belong to or be certified by any number of associations, boards and societies. The most important one, though, is the American Board of Plastic Surgery, so make sure that your doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Other notable associations include the following: The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Before and after pictures of procedures: photos can be particularly helpful to you when selecting a surgeon for your plastic surgery procedure. A good surgeon should have lots of pics of previous patients for you to review, allowing you to get an idea of the possible results that you can achieve. If possible, you’ll want to look at those photographs or images that pertain to your particular procedure, for instance chin photos, female photos, nose photos, genital photos, photos of breast procedures, or the like.

Recovery: The time that it takes a patient to recover from surgery will vary according to each procedure and each particular case. Patients are typically able to return to work in the following amounts of time after the following procedures: abdominoplasty – 2 to 4 weeks; breast augmentation – a few days; eyelid surgery – 2 or 3 days; facelift – 10 to 14 days; hair replacement – 2 to 5 days; liposuction – 1 to 2 weeks; nose surgery – 1 to 2 weeks. Some procedures require special garments or bandages to be worn after the procedure, for instance a type of compression garment may be worn after liposuction.

Results: While the results of some procedures are long-lasting and permanent, such as with rhinoplasty, other procedures may not be. For instance, liposuction results can be long-lasting if a healthy diet and exercise regime are followed, but future weight gain can cause fat to form again in the areas where it was removed.

Scars: Most procedures do result in scars, though many of them are strategically placed to allow for minimum visibility and most do fade in time. In addition, special camouflaging makeup can sometimes be worn, such as after facelift surgery.

Complications of plastic surgery: Like all surgery, there are risks of acquiring complications. These can include the risk of infection, unsuccessful results, dangers of or associated with anesthesia, bleeding, poor healing, death risks, excessive scarring, and others. Because there are particular complications associated with each procedure, be sure to discuss these with your surgeon. You must weigh the good and bad, the pros and cons of the particular procedure before deciding whether it’s right for you.

Procedures gone wrong: We’ve all heard horror stories and nightmares of procedures gone bad, stories of medical horrors and mistakes, disasters, accidents, mishaps, malpractice, and bad, awful, horrible and the worst botched results. We’ve seen pictures of bad implants and nose jobs, and all sorts of bad pictures of various procedures. Okay, some may stretch the truth a bit, but no doubt some are real. That’s why it’s always important to find a qualified surgeon.
