Planning your tummy tuck surgery

During the initial consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your health, determine the extent of fat deposits in your abdominal region, and carefully assess your skin tone. He or she should be equally frank and clear with you, describing the risks and limitations of the surgery. He or she should also clearly inform you of other alternatives. Your surgeon should speak openly and extensively with you in order to recommend the procedure that will produce results closest to your desired body contour.

As well, during the consultation your surgeon should also explain the anesthesia he or she will use, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, and the costs involved.

Is a tummy tuck covered by my health insurance plan?

A tummy tuck is considered a cosmetic procedure, so most health insurance policies do not cover the cost of a tummy tuck. However, you should check your policy just in case. In some cases, a patient may have a hernia, a section of intestine or other internal organ that pushes through an opening in an abdominal muscle, and not just a spreading of the abdominal muscles. In these cases, insurance reimbursement is sometimes available for the portion of the procedure that is not cosmetic.
