Facelift surgery, known also as rhytidectomy or rhytidoplasty, is the surgical procedure which can reduce wrinkling and sagging of the face and neck. In order to achieve this, the skin of the face and neck can be redraped, excess fat removed, and/or the underlying muscles tightened.

The procedure may require several hours to complete and may be performed in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. The procedure is most likely to involve either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation.

Incisions are usually located just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and ending at the lower scalp. The skin is then separated from its underlying fat and muscle in order to trim or suction out fat in the chin and neck areas. The underlying muscles might require tightening before the skin is pulled back, any any excess skin removed, and the incisions closed.

Within ten to fourteen days, patients are typically able to return to work, though more strenuous activity may need to be held off on for two or more weeks.

The risks associated with facelift surgery are listed as follows: adverse anesthesia reactions, asymmetry, bleeding, change in hairline, excessive scarring, hematoma, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing.
