The procedure typically takes several hours to complete and may occur in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. The type of anesthesia most often used is either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation. Incisions are typically located just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and down to the lower scalp. With these incisions made, the skin is then separated from the fat and muscle beneath it, and fat is trimmed or suctioned out from areas of the chin and neck. The underlying muscles can require tightening before the skin is pulled back, any any excess skin cut away, and the incisions closed. Most patients are able to return to work within ten to fourteen days. However, more strenuous activities should be avoided for two or more weeks. The potential risks or complications associated with facelift surgery are as follows: adverse anesthesia reactions, asymmetry, bleeding, change in hairline, excessive scarring, hematoma, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing.
