The procedure can take several hours to complete and may be carried out in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. Either a local anesthetic combined with sedation or a general anesthetic is likely to be used. Incisions are usually positioned just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and finishing at the lower scalp. After the incisions are made, the skin can then be separated from the fat and muscle beneath it, allowing extra fat of the chin and neck to be trimmed or suctioned out. The underlying muscles may require tightening before the skin is pulled back, any any excess removed, and the incisions closed. Within ten to fourteen days, most patients find that they can return to work. More strenuous activity, however, may need to be avoided for two weeks or longer. Complications which can result from facelift surgery are as follows: adverse anesthesia reactions, asymmetry, bleeding, change in hairline, excessive scarring, hematoma, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing. ![]()
