The procedure commonly takes several hours to complete and may take place in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. The type of anesthesia most often used is either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation. Incisions are typically located just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and ending at the lower scalp. Chin and neck fat can be trimmed or suctioned out after the incisions are made and the skin is separated from the underlying fat and muscle. The underlying muscles may need to be tightened before the skin is pulled back, any any extra skin trimmed, and the incisions closed. Within ten to fourteen days, patients are typically able to return to work, though more strenuous activity may need to be held off on for two or more weeks. The risks of facelift surgery may include the following: adverse anesthesia reactions, asymmetry, bleeding, change in hairline, excessive scarring, hematoma, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing.
