The procedure typically requires several hours to complete and may be performed in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. General anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation is most often used. Incisions are most often situated just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and terminating at the lower scalp. After the incisions are made, the skin can then be separated from the fat and muscle beneath it, allowing extra fat of the chin and neck to be trimmed or suctioned out. The underlying muscles can require tightening before the skin is pulled back, any any excess skin cut away, and the incisions closed. While strenuous activities may need to be avoided for two or more weeks, most patients find that they’re able to return to work within ten to fourteen days. Facelift surgery, also known by the medical terms rhytidectomy or rhytidoplasty, is the surgical procedure able to reduce wrinkling and sagging of the face and neck.
