Facelift surgery, also referred to as rhytidectomy or rhytidoplasty, is the surgical procedure created to minimize wrinkling and sagging of the face and neck. A more youthful appearance can be achieved by removing excess fat, tightening the underlying muscles, and/or redraping the skin of the face and neck.

The procedure commonly takes several hours to complete and may occur in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. Local anesthesia combined with sedation or general anesthesia is usually used.

Incisions are typically situated just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and coming to a stop at the lower scalp. The underlying muscles may also be tightened before the skin is pulled back, any any extra skin removed, and the incisions closed.

Patients typically find that they can return to work within ten to fourteen days, though it may take two or more weeks before more strenuous activity can be resumed.
