Facelift surgery, also called rhytidectomy or rhytidoplasty, is the surgical procedure designed to minimize wrinkling and sagging of the face and neck. A more youthful appearance can be achieved by removing excess fat, tightening the underlying muscles, and/or redraping the skin of the face and neck.

The procedure can require several hours to complete and can occur in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. Either a local anesthetic combined with sedation or a general anesthetic is likely to be used.

Incisions are typically situated just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and concluding at the lower scalp. With these incisions made, the skin is then separated from the fat and muscle beneath it, and fat is trimmed or suctioned out from areas of the chin and neck. The underlying muscles can require tightening before the skin is pulled back, any any excess skin removed, and the incisions closed.

While strenuous activities may need to be avoided for two or more weeks, most patients find that they’re able to return to work within ten to fourteen days.
