Most patients are able to return to work within ten to fourteen days. However, more strenuous activities should be avoided for two or more weeks. Facelift surgery, also called rhytidectomy or rhytidoplasty, is the surgical procedure aimed at reducing wrinkling and sagging of the face and neck. A more youthful appearance can be achieved by removing excess fat, tightening the underlying muscles, and/or redraping the skin of the face and neck. The risks of facelift surgery may include the following: adverse anesthesia reactions, asymmetry, bleeding, change in hairline, excessive scarring, hematoma, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing. Incisions are typically situated just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and coming to an end at the lower scalp. The skin is then separated from its underlying fat and muscle in order to trim or suction out fat in the chin and neck areas. The underlying muscles might require tightening before the skin is pulled back, any any extra skin cut away, and the incisions closed.
