Facelift surgery, also called rhytidectomy or rhytidoplasty, is the surgical procedure intended to minimize wrinkling and sagging of the face and neck. By redraping the skin of the face and neck, removing excess fat, and/or tightening the underlying muscles, a smoother, more youthful appearance can be achieved.

The procedure typically requires several hours to complete and may be performed in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. The procedure is most likely to involve either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation.

Incisions are most often positioned just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and stopping at the lower scalp. Once the incisions are made, the skin is then separated from the underlying fat and muscle. Excess fat in the chin and neck areas can then be trimmed or suctioned out. The underlying muscles may require tightening before the skin is pulled back, any any extra skin cut away, and the incisions closed.

Most patients are able to return to work within ten to fourteen days. However, more strenuous activities should be avoided for two or more weeks.

Potential complications associated with facelift surgery may include the following: adverse anesthesia reactions, asymmetry, bleeding, change in hairline, excessive scarring, hematoma, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing.
