Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy or rhytidoplasty, is the surgical procedure designed to reduce wrinkling and sagging of the face and neck. This can be achieved by redraping the skin of the face and neck, removing excess fat, and/or tightening the underlying muscles.

The procedure typically takes several hours to complete and can be performed in a surgeon’s office, an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. Local anesthesia combined with sedation or general anesthesia is usually used.

Incision are most often placed just above the hairline at the temples, running down in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and ending at the lower scalp. With these incisions made, the skin is then separated form the fat and muscle beneath it, and fat is trimmed or suctioned out from areas of the chin and neck. They underlying muscles may also be tightened before the skin is pulled back, any excess removed, and the incisions close.

Patients typically find that they can return to work within ten to fourteen days, though it may take two or more weeks before more strenuous activity can be resumed. The potential risks or complications associated with facelift surgery can include the following: adverse anesthesia reactions, asymmetry, bleeding, change in hairline, excessive scarring, hematoma, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing.
