Like all other surgical treatments, breast augmentation comes with its own set of risks. The most common risk associated with breast augmentation surgery is capsular contracture. This condition is the hardening of breast tissue due to the excessive formation of scar tissue that is naturally reacting to the introduction of a foreign object to the body, which in this case is the implant. Under this scenario, a second surgery may be required to either remove the scar tissue or to remove the implant.

As with other surgical procedures, there is the possibility that excessive bleeding can occur. However, this occurrence is rare. Additionally, there is a small percentage that breast implant patients may develop an infection around the implant. This may require the removal of the implant, however, a new implant can be inserted once the infection clears.

Another breast augmentation risk is the possibility of visible scarring. Unfortunately, scarring will occur with this procedure. However, considering how long most plastic surgeons have performed this type of surgery countless times, the chances of minimal scarring increases with the expertise of your plastic surgeon.

Breast Augmentation Advantages

Although many people may laugh at the notion of breast augmentation having any advantages outside of cosmetic reasons, the truth is that individuals who do undergo this operation are particularly happy with its results. An increased sense of happiness with their appearance and therefore themselves are the predominant reason for this treatment.

In a 2003 survey conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery given to breast implant patients about the reasons why they chose to have breast augmentation were:

• 83% wanted to look better in clothes.

• 81% wanted to feel better about themselves.
• 79% wanted to feel more confident.
• 75% wanted to feel less self-conscious.

Reflecting on the results of breast augmentation, this same survey revealed that:

• 93% would recommend breast augmentation to friends and family members.
• 92% are happy about their decision to get breast implants
• 88% said augmentation "completely" or "mostly" met their expectations.
• 92% reported positive effects on their overall appearance.
• 84% said they would "very likely" get breast implants if they could choose again based on what they known, and 8% answered “likely” to the same question.
