Breast augmentation is the surgery performed to correct the size, shape or proportion of a woman's breasts.

This procedure can be performed solely for cosmetic reasons, though it may also be used to reconstruct the breast(s) following mastectomy or on patients with severe congenital deformities of the breast(s).

The procedure can be completed in a hospital, surgical center, or office, and it is typically performed on an outpatient basis, though some cases may require an overnight stay. It usually takes between one and three hours to complete, and general anesthesia is most commonly used though local anesthesia combined with sedation may also be an option.

The incision may be located under the armpit, within the crease below the breast, or around the nipple. The implant is typically filled with a saline solution after it has been inserted. The implant can be located in a choice of two areas, either directly below the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle.

Typically involving shorter recovery times and potentially less pain, the subglandular placement, which is directly beneath the breast tissue, is associated with an increased risk of capsular contracture and mammography interference. Additionally, this placement may make it easier for the implant to be seen and felt through the skin after the procedure. Less obviously seen or felt implants are typically achieved with the submuscular placement, or beneath the chest muscle. This placement also tends to include a decreased risk of capsular contracture and mammography interference. Still, this placement can also produce longer surgery and recovery times, potentially more pain, and a decreased accessibility to the implant if future re-operation is ever required.

Strenuous activity and any physical exertion which can raise the pulse and blood pressure will need to be avoided for several weeks. However, most patients find that they are well enough to return to work within several days after the procedure. The potential risks which can accompany breast augmentation surgery can include the following: the need for additional surgeries, anesthesia reactions, breast feeding complications, breast tissue atrophy, calcium deposits, capsular contracture, changes in nipple and breast sensation, deflation or rupture of the implant, delayed wound healing, dissatisfaction, excessive bleeding, extrusion, hematoma or seroma, infection, mammogram interference, necrosis or skin death, pain, rippling, shifting of the implant, and toxic shock syndrome.
