The implant is typically filled with a saline solution after it has been inserted. The implant can be located in a choice of two areas, either directly below the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. Typically involving shorter recovery times and potentially less pain, the subglandular placement, which is directly beneath the breast tissue, is associated with an increased risk of capsular contracture and mammography interference. Additionally, this placement may make it easier for the implant to be seen and felt through the skin after the procedure. Less obviously seen or felt implants are typically achieved with the submuscular placement, or beneath the chest muscle. This placement also tends to include a decreased risk of capsular contracture and mammography interference. Still, this placement can also produce longer surgery and recovery times, potentially more pain, and a decreased accessibility to the implant if future re-operation is ever required. Strenuous activity and any physical exertion which can raise the pulse and blood pressure will need to be avoided for several weeks. However, most patients find that they are well enough to return to work within several days after the procedure.
