Breast Implant Size

After consulting with a plastic surgeon and choosing one that you feel comfortable with, it is now time to make decisions about the nature of your implant. Determining size is based on your preference and it is important that you have a clear idea of the size, type, and style of implant that you feel will give the look that you want. In many instances, a plastic surgeon’s personal preferences about breast size may influence your decision, so therefore it is important that you spend a substantial amount of time researching the different size, types, and style of implants that are available.

In choosing what the size of breast implant you desire in breast augmentation surgery is, it may be important to keep in mind that the most popular change in breast size was from an A cup to a C cup. Other popular increase breast sizes were from a B cup to a C cup or from a B cup to a D cup. In most cases, the women who undergo breast augmentation surgery are naturally an A cup with the most popular increase of breast size being two sizes. It is almost to consider how the breast implants will fit into your overall appearance. One good indicator of size increase is hip to bust ratio. However, the type of breast implant size you choose will go a long way of determining how your overall body type will be perceived.

Breast Implant Surface

Another important decision to make in breast augmentation is the type of implant surface you would want. Two implant surface types exist, being smooth and textured. Textured implants have numerous tiny microscopic bumps on the outside of the implant whereas a smooth implant does not. Additionally, smooth implants have a softer and more natural feel. The pros and cons between the two are listed below:

Pros Cons

Smooth Implant

  • Wrinkles less than textured implants.
  • Ideal if the implant is going to be placed over the muscle.
  • Has a higher rate of capsular contracture, which is the hardening of the breast tissue around the implant due to excess scar tissue formation.

Textured Implant

  • Has a lower rate of capsular contracture.
  • Wrinkles more than smooth implants.

Breast Implant Filler Material

Another important decision to make regarding the type of implant you want is the filler material used. A breast implant contains of a silicone gel that is filled with some kind of filler material. In recent years, the predominant material has been saline, which is a saltwater solution that is similar to the fluid that makes up the majority of the human body. Saline is considered safe and is given intravenously in instances where an individual is dehydrated or about to be placed under general anesthesia. However, up to 1992, the most popular implant filler material was silicone gel. As a filler material, silicone gel looks and feels more natural than a saline implant. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, banned the use of silicone gel in 1992 due to concerns about its effects on the human body. Implants that use silicone gel have a higher rate of capsular contracture than saline implants. Although the use of silicone gel has been reintroduced under the close supervision of the FDA, it is highly recommended that saline be used as the filler material in implants.

Breast Implant Shape

Another decision to make prior to breast augmentation surgery is the shape of the breast implant. There are two predominant options regarding implant shape. One is the round implant that conforms to the natural shape of the breast. The other is the anatomical or “tear dropped” implant that is often used in instances where large parts of the breast had been removed in a previous operation, such as mastectomy reconstruction. The pros and cons of both these types of breast implant shapes are listed below:

Pros Cons

Round Implant

  • Provides the most natural look and feel.
  • Associated with the fewest number of potential complications.
  • Offers less control over long-term superior pole (upper portion of the breast) fullness.

Anatomical Implant

  • Provides a contour that is similar to the natural shape of a breast.
  • For long-chested women, it provides greater control of superior pole (upper portion of the breast) fullness.
  • Uses only a textured surface in order for it to adhere to breast tissue and not rotate in the body.
  • Has a possibility that if rotated, the upper portion of the implant could be inappropriately positioned outward or inward.
