Introduction

Self-improvement is a natural human desire. This is particularly true when it comes to matters concerning the physical body. It is very rare to find an individual that does not have some detail of their body that they wish could be improved. Although most people wish this wasn’t the case, physical appearance plays an important role in how an individual is perceived by their peers. It is usually the basis in which first impressions are formed. More important than how an individual’s physical appearance is perceived by others is how an individual perceives their own physical appearance. Happiness with the way you look plays a vital role in your confidence and your overall happiness.

One of the most effective ways of producing positive change in your body is through plastic surgery. Plastic surgery has exploded in popularity over the last decade and its greatest benefit is producing happiness in the patient, which creates an overall positive effect on the patient’s lives. For women, one of the most popular plastic surgery treatments is breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that is over a century old, which through the implementation of breast implants, has the end result of enhancing the size and shape of a woman’s breast. Also known by its technical term, augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery techniques available. In the year 2000, it was estimated that over 200,000 women in the United States of America had breast augmentation.

Are you a good candidate for breast augmentation?

There are many reasons why you may be interested in breast augmentation but some of the most popular reasons for interest in this procedure are:

  • To enlarge breasts in order to make the body more proportional.
  • To reshape and enlarge breasts that has been reduced following pregnancy.
  • To reshape and enlarge breasts as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.
  • To balance a difference in breast size or shape.

The effects of breast augmentation can be startling with the most popular breast augmentation enhancement being a breast increase from an A cup to a C cup. Despite the ways that breast augmentation can improve your appearance, it is important to temper your expectations about how it will change your life. Perfect contentment with your physical body following breast augmentation is an unrealistic goal and the best attitude to go into this treatment is to expect simple improvement in the way that you look.

However, breast augmentation is not for everybody. There are a variety of factors that may prohibit some women from this treatment that includes health reasons and incorrect intentions or expectations about breast augmentation. Under these circumstances it is recommended that women not undergo this procedure:

  • Women with serious medical problems as poor illness often results in changes in how the body heals, which can cause problems during or after breast augmentation surgery.
  • Women who view breast augmentation as a cure for poor self-esteem, troubled relationships, or overall discontent with body image.
  • Women with existing malignant or pre-malignant cancer of the breasts that have not received adequate treatment.
  • Women who have a strong family history of breast cancer as breast augmentation can have negative effects on breast cancer screening, particularly mammograms.
  • Women with a personal or family history of numerous breast cysts as the presence of breast cysts often require biopsies to determine whether the breast cysts are cancerous. Biopsies often require needles that can cause deflation of the implant.
  • Women who are currently pregnant or who are breastfeeding.
  • Women who are actively gaining or losing weight as weight fluctuation is often mirrored by changes in the shape and size of the breasts.
  • Women whose decisions are being influenced by others.

Although breast augmentations are mainly performed on women, there are some instances where men can benefit from this treatment. Male-to-female transsexuals, female impersonators, gender benders, and cross dressers can benefit from breast augmentation to improve their appearance and presentation. Breast augmentation in men is an identical procedure as it is for women. However, some plastic surgeons may not perform this treatment on men for whatever reason, so it is important to be clear about your genre when making an appointment with a plastic surgeon.

Breast Augmentation and Age

In a 2003 study conducted by The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and given to breast implant patients; it was found that the average age of a woman who underwent surgical breast augmentation was 34 years old. Additionally, 74% of those breast implant patients were either married or in a long-term relationship, with 82% of the surveyed having some college education. For the most part, breast implant patients have children and have been considering breast augmentation surgery for many years.

Although there are no age limits associated with breast augmentation, it is usually recommended that women wait until their breasts have finished developing before considering this surgery. For the most part, the youngest age for breast augmentation is 18. However, in instances where there is pronounced asymmetry and reconstruction, breast augmentation can be performed on women that are younger than 18. Generally, breast augmentation surgery patients are in their mid-thirties but it is possible to undergo this treatment later on in life. There are instances where women in their late 60’s have undergone breast augmentation treatment. However, in instances of having breast augmentation surgery at an older age, it is important that you have the necessary health required for post-surgery healing and the surgical use of anesthesia.
