A abdominoplasty, known also as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure able to produce a flatter, more pleasing abdomen. To achieve this, the muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened and excess fat and skin of the middle and lower abdomen are removed. This procedure can be carried out in a surgical center, office or hospital, and most commonly requires either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation. The procedure can take anywhere from two to five hours to complete.
The surgeon will begin by making an incision from hipbone to hipbone, along with another incision which frees the bellybutton from the tissue adjacent to it. The skin is then separated and lifted to reveal the vertical muscles of the abdomen which are then tightened. The skin flap is then pulled back and the extra skin removed. A new hole is then cut for the bellybutton, which is stitched into place, and the incisions are then closed.
