The surgeon will start by making an incision from hipbone to hipbone, along with another incision which frees the bellybutton from the tissue surrounding it. By separating and lifting the skin, the vertical muscles are revealed and can then be tightened. The skin flap is then drawn back down and the extra skin cut away. A new hole is then cut for the bellybutton, which is stitched into place, and the incisions are then closed.
