Abdominoplasty, known also as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure intended to provide a flatter, more pleasing abdomen. This involves the removal of excess fat and skin from the abdomen, along with tightening of the abdominal muscles.

The procedure is usually completed within two to five hours. The surgeon starts the procedure by making an incision from hipbone to hipbone, along with another incision which frees the bellybutton from its adjacent tissue. By separating and lifting the skin, the vertical muscles are revealed and can then be tightened. The skin flap is then drawn back down and the surplus skin excised. Once a new hole is cut for the bellybutton, it is then stitched into place, and the incisions are then closed.
After the procedure, most patients find that they can return to work within two to four weeks, though more strenuous activities may need to be put off for four to six weeks. The following potential risks and complications can occur with abdominoplasty surgery: bleeding under the skin flap, blood clots, conspicuous scarring, infection, poor healing, skin loss, and the need for additional surgery.
