Abdominoplasty, known also as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure which can produce a flatter, more pleasing abdomen. Excess fat and skin are removed from the abdomen and the muscles of the abdominal wall tightened in order to achieve this.

Two to five hours is typically required to complete the procedure. The surgeon starts the procedure by making an incision from hipbone to hipbone, along with another incision which frees the bellybutton from its surrounding tissue. The skin is then separated and lifted to reveal the vertical muscles of the abdomen which are then tightened. The skin flap is then pulled back and the extra skin cut away. A new hole is then cut for the bellybutton, which is stitched into place, and the incisions are then closed.
After the procedure, most patients are able to return to work within two to four weeks, though more strenuous activities may need to be postponed for four to six weeks. The following potential risks and complications can occur with abdominoplasty surgery: bleeding under the skin flap, blood clots, conspicuous scarring, infection, poor healing, skin loss, and the need for additional surgery.
