Abdominoplasty, known also as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure intended to produce a flatter, more pleasing abdomen. To achieve this, the muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened and excess fat and skin are removed from the middle and lower abdomen. This procedure may be carried out in a surgical center, office or hospital, and most commonly involves the use of either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation. It typically takes between two and five hours to complete.

The skin is then separated and lifted to reveal the vertical muscles of the abdomen which are then tightened. The skin flap is then pulled back and the surplus skin removed. A new hole is then cut for the bellybutton, which is stitched into place, and the incisions are then closed.
After the procedure, most patients can go back to work within two to four weeks, though more strenuous activities may need to be avoided for four to six weeks. The following are potential risks and complications associated with abdominoplasty surgery: bleeding under the skin flap, blood clots, conspicuous scarring, infection, poor healing, skin loss, and the need for additional surgery.
